I just want to make a post to sum up the basics of what is currently known about Jonny’s Telecasters. We will only discuss guitars that he has used, not ones held in one-off videos.
He has had FIVE of them:
Cream Fender Telecaster
This was Jonny’s first electric guitar, bought from his guitar teacher when he was sixteen(Jonny, not the guitar teacher). It was stolen in Leeds at the Duchess of York on May 15 1992, during Radiohead’s first tour(the Creep Tour).
Sunburst Fender Telecaster Plus (Tele1)
Jonny’s third and current main Telecaster Plus. Used for every album and nearly every performance since it was purchased in 1995/6. The guitar is stock save for the the bridge pickup splitter being removed, a cutoff switch added, the volume knob being removed, and a screw-sized mystery knob near the neck of his guitar. Used on more songs than not, when a guitar was used at least. Can be seen during countless live videos, so I’ll pick some of my favorites: Airbag, Bodysnatchers, Staircase.
Sunburst Fender Telecaster Plus (old Tele1) Stolen.
Jonny’s original Telecaster Plus, this guitar was used on Pablo Honey and The Bends. It also had its pickup splitter removed and a cutoff switch added, a feature which Jonny used often during early nineties live performances. It was stolen in 1995 along with the rest of the band’s gear. The guitar was last used on a recording for Lucky, which was recorded just a month before the guitar was stolen. It can also be seen in the Just music video.
Ebony Frost Fender Telecaster Plus (old Tele2) Stolen.
Jonny’s second Telecaster Plus, this guitar was purchased circa 1994. Jonny used both this guitar and his old Tele1 during live performances at the time. It was also stolen in 1995 along with the rest of the band’s gear. This guitar is actually the one used for the album version of My Iron Lung.*
*The album version of My Iron Lung was actually a direct recording of the band’s performance of the song at The Astoria, save for vocal overdubbing and slight mixing changes. If one watches the video of the performance, the old Tele2 is clearly visible.
Sunburst Fender Telecaster Standard/Plus (Tele2)
Jonny’s current spare Telecaster, purchased circa 1995. This is a Telecaster standard which Jonny and his tech converted into a a Telecaster Plus; the original pickups were removed and replaced with the relevant Lace Sensor, with the guitar routed to fit them. Like the Tele1, it also features a cutoff switch and the mystery miniknob. It was also fitted with a Kaoss Pad screen circa 2005-6, though it has yet to be used live. The guitar was used for Jonny’s performance of Electric Counterpoint at ACO Underground.
